West Nile Virus-Another Important Spring Vaccination Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain and or spinal cord. It develops in horses exposed to the West Nile Virus when the virus itself invades these sensitive tissues causing inflammation. The disease is also called West Nile Fever. Horses can be exposed to the virus without developing sickness but in horses with West Nile Encephalitis, it is often fatal (50% of horses with clinical signs die) and horses that do recover can continue to have signs over a prolonged period of time. SAA – Stall Side Testing for Infection
Routine exams and temperatures are important ways to help determine if your horse is ill or may have an issue that affects performance. These diagnostics are also a way equine health is evaluated for potential infectious diseases at the farm. But a new test is available that is easy to perform and can be done right at the stall, the SAA. This test is able to detect when inflammation is present in the horse even before the horse develops a fever or there are other blood work abnormalities such as increased white blood cell counts or fibrinogen. We thought we would recognize some of the hard-working and dedicated women of the equine world. JULIE KRONE Jockey is a profession dominated by men. JULIE KRONE found her place in this touch crowd. Gastroscopy Clinic
On Friday, February 21 and Saturday the 22nd we will be holding a special gastroscopy clinic. For eligible horses this examination will be performed for $300 which will include clinic fee, sedation and gastroscopy followed by veterinary recommendations. (Normally valued at $450) If diagnosed with gastric ulcers, other special offers may apply. Horses may be disqualified from participation if they have concurrent medical conditions in which gastroscopic examination would be contraindicated. Participation will be first come, first served. Payment will be taken in advance. Since a horse’s stomach must be completely empty prior to examination, you will be notified of the preparation procedure when you make the appointment.
